Although this technology remained experimental for a long time, it is the origin of the modern systems used today in transport and energy infrastructures.<\/p><p class=\"mb-4\">During the <strong>20th century<\/strong>, hydrogen was mainly used in heavy industry: ammonia production (for fertilizers), petroleum refining and methanol production. Its use was technical, and limited to specialized processes.<\/p><p class=\"mb-4\">One of its first large-scale uses was in the space industry. <strong>NASA<\/strong> began using liquid hydrogen as a rocket fuel in the 1950s. It was chosen for its very high energy density and its ability to produce only water vapor as a waste product.<\/p><p class=\"mb-4\">The <strong>1973 oil crisis<\/strong> sparked renewed interest in alternatives to fossil fuels. Hydrogen emerged as a potential solution, but it was expensive to produce and complex to store.<\/p><p class=\"mb-4\">It wasn&#8217;t until the beginning of the <strong>21st<\/strong> century, with the rise of climate concerns and the expansion of <strong>renewable energies<\/strong>, that hydrogen came back into the spotlight. This is<strong>green hydrogen<\/strong>, produced by electrolysis of water using solar or wind-generated electricity.<\/p><p class=\"mb-4\">Unlike &#8220;grey&#8221; hydrogen (derived from natural gas, a high CO\u2082 emitter), green hydrogen emits no polluting emissions. It is becoming a pillar of energy strategies aiming for <strong>carbon neutrality<\/strong> by 2050.<\/p><p class=\"mb-4\">Today, hydrogen is booming.
